The programme
In recognition of the specificity of the Pacific region, the UNPRPD Pacific Enable project was set-up as a multi-country initiative covering the Republic of Nauru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), the Republic of Vanuatu, the Republic of Fiji, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands, Republic of Kiribati, Cook Islands and Independent State of Samoa. Building on the unique and close relationship between the Pacific Island Forum Secretariat and the Pacific Disability Forum, the project provided policy support and facilitated national multi-stakeholder dialogue to advance CRPD ratification processes as well as the development of CRPD-compliant legislation. In keeping with priorities identified by governments and regional organizations of persons with disabilities – among other things through the Incheon Strategy and the Pacific Regional Strategy on Disability – the project focused on four related themes: strengthening legislative and regulatory frameworks (CRPD articles 4,5 and 12); strengthening national-level data collection processes (CRPD article 31); improving education outcomes for children with disabilities (CRPD article 24); and increasing work and employment opportunities for men and women with disabilities (CRPD article 27) .
The Pacific Disability Forum (PDF) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) are the two key regional leading agencies on disability and they have been closely involved in the development, implementation and monitoring of the proposal to ensure compliance with the Pacific Regional Strategy on Disability and ensure correct framing of the proposal from the perspectives and best interests of persons living with disability.
